We were on a trip going to Fetel Island. I had always wanted to go there since I was five! My dad had finally agreed to go if I got a distinction in all of my tests – and to my own joy, I did!
Just when dad wanted to turn at the junction, a van just came rushing by and hit our car. It hit across the front seat and the impact was great. The windows shattered and blood was strewn everywhere. Everything happened in a matter of seconds – it all happened in a flash; a blink of an eye.
When I regained my consciousness and tried opening my eyes, I was only greeted by total darkness. I tried opening my eyes wider, but the darkness just wouldn’t disappear.
After a few tries, I gave up and I could feel myself sweating. Someone touched my hand and I was afraid of that person. His hand was warm. I grabbed my hand away from that touch and curled myself onto a side. I felt as though I was at the edge of something – I figure it was a bed. “Where am I?” I asked whoever that touched me earlier.
“Miss Mikan Sakrua, you’re at the Hopreat Hospital. I’m your doctor, Hyuuga Natsume and I’m here to ask you on your condition?” the person said. He continued when I didn’t speak, “You do remember about the accident you were involved in, don’t you?”
Yes, I remembered the accident very well. With that thought in mind, I quickly asked, “Where are my parents?” I said and kneeled towards his voice.
“We already tried our hardest,” was all he said. Although I couldn’t see, I knew exactly what he meant by that. My parents are..dead. I felt warmth beneath my eyes. Tears started streaming down my cheeks and down to my hands which were placed on the bed.
“No, it can’t be,” I said. I love my parents a lot. I am not like the some other teenagers that forget their parents after they reach their maturity level. I am not the type to send my parents to the old folks home when I’m older. I am seventeen and I still love my parents. They are my first best friend. Why did God take them away from me? “Then, what happened to me? I can’t see. I’m surrounded by darkness. Am I blind?” I asked him.
“A glass shard pierced your retina but you still survived the accident. You should be glad,” he asked me with a bland tone.
“Glad!? How can I be glad when my parents are..” I yelled at him but stop at the end. I was losing it.
“Do you have any other family members we could contact?” he asked me – ignoring the anger aura around me.
“No. I don’t have any other family members. I was my parents’ only child and they were both adopted” I just said. “I feel tired, doctor. Do you mind if I rest?” I said to him. I just wanted to cry to myself and be left alone in this awful darkness. I needed to cry my heart out. I heard the door shut before me and I cried my eyes out. I was the cause for the accident. If I didn’t pester my parents to go to Fetel Island, none of this would have happened.
I’m now blind. What could a blind person like me possibly do?
